Agatha's Tea Room

by Dawn Pisturino

The gold letters on the front window read:

“Agatha’s Tea Room.”

A tiny hole in the wall barely noticed

By pedestrians on the sidewalk

And drivers in the street.

Old. Stodgy. Stuffy. Old-fashioned.

Easily ignored.

But my addiction to that stimulating beverage

Brought me to this door,

And here I brought my young daughter

To introduce her to the scintillating pleasures of cream tea.

Holding her tiny hand, I pushed open

The heavy wooden door, inhaling the aroma

Of freshly-baked scones and hot Earl Grey tea.

My heart quickened in my chest

For here, I felt comfortable and at home.

Antique sideboards from Victoria’s London

Sheltered fine porcelain and bone floral China.

My daughter, neatly attired in her Alice in Wonderland dress

And Mary Jane shoes, perfectly matched

The paintings of Alice on the walls.

Our British waiter seated us with a pleasant smile.

Soon, I was sipping my black tea,

Liberally whitened with cream,

And my daughter drank milk

As she learned the delicate task of savoring a buttered scone

Crowned with clotted cream and black currant jam.
